Reason: discrimination against Muslims
Muslims represent the largest minority in India (about 13.4% of the population ). Yet, they are subject to constant discrimination. The government report of the Sachar Committee, published in November 2006, says they almost always come back of the pack. Muslims are poorer than poor Hindus poor, often even behind the outcasts. They are less educated and less represented in government, public services, etc.. They are the target of systematic manifestations of violence instigated by the Hindu right. When there is a trial, they are often poorly compensated and perpetrators are rarely apprehended. Worse still, a process of ghettoization is being put in place. The dangerous result is that young Muslims find themselves increasingly marginalized.
Muslims who live mostly in the Kashmir Valley are under attack, abuse, arbitrary arrests and even disappearances. They recently organized a resistance movement, leading a kind of peaceful intifada. One of these terrorist attacks in Mumbai, who spoke on Indian television with her laptop had a Kashmiri accent. He talked about the mistreatment of Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir.
