Towards a universal decriminalization of homosexuality

France and the Netherlands were presented Thursday in New York, UN a call for universal decriminalization of homosexuality. The text is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Rama Yade, Secretary of State for Human Rights, and Maxime Verhagen, Dutch Foreign Minister, are the instigators of that statement, but these have received support from only 66 out of 192 countries listed, including the entire European Union. The statement was meant to historical divides, therefore, already the United Nations. One third of the country planet, as the U.S. took no position.

The text makes reference to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is celebrating sixty years. It reaffirms the "principle of non-discrimination requires that Human rights applies equally to every human being regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."

Indeed, the situation of homosexuals or transgender people in some countries is really worrying. People are stoned, hanged, beheaded or tortured solely because of their sexual orientation. Homosexuality is banned in 77 countries and punishable by death penalty in six nations (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran, Mauritania, Nigeria, Sudan and Yemen). In Switzerland, homosexuality was finally decriminalized in 1942.

Jacques Chirac in Jerusalem - 1996

For the record:

Jacques Chirac, visiting Israel, wanted to do a walkabout in Jerusalem. He had requested a minimum security, but the Israeli government has decided otherwise. Military at every crossroads, rooftop ... impossible to tighten hands of Palestinian merchants. On three occasions, Chirac asked the security chief to let go. After a while, it explodes ... I did not find the video in its entirety, but this small excerpt is worth a visit ...

Demonstration for the human right to water

A coalition of organizations involved in defending and promoting the human right to hold water on December 10 at 12:30 in Brussels a civic event in the European Parliament. They complain that the dominant social forces of the most powerful and influential in the world have managed to prevent the United Nations to recognize access to water as a human right, on the occasion of the celebration of 60 th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Recall that the difficulty of access to clean water now affects 1.5 billion people. Poverty is the main cause of lack of access to water. Drastic measures must be taken sooner rather than later!

Israeli police blocking humanitarian deliveries to Gaza

Israeli police Sunday, December 7 blocked the departure of a vessel carrying food and medical supplies that Israeli Arabs want to engage in the Gaza Strip. Because of the blockade imposed by Israel since Hamas came to power, the ship was placed under supervision in the Tel Aviv Marina.

This is unfortunately not the first and surely not the last. As late as last week, a Libyan ship channel in Gaza was 3,000 tons of food, medicines and humanitarian aid. He was baffled by the Israeli navy.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza worries the UN and civil rights of man, who asked Israel to release the blockade of the territory ruled from June 2006. Yet nothing happens. The situation is worsening and the international community is concerned ... but does nothing.

Engagement Congrat Messages

Stop Cluster Munitions!

a hundred countries met Wednesday, December 3 at Oslo to sign a treaty banning cluster munitions. They called the largest producers, such as the United States and Russia to join the agreement, but they persist in refusing to sign the treaty.

Norway, causing the process to ban, was the first to sign the agreement which prohibits the production, use, storage and trade in these weapons and obliges signatories to provide assistance to victims of cluster munitions (cluster bombs).

To enter into force, the text must be ratified by at least 30 states. Norway hoped that the goal would be reached in early 2009.

Cluster munitions can contain hundreds of bomblets which scatter over a wide area but not all explode, turning itself into de facto anti-personnel mine. According to Handicap International, about 100,000 people, 98% of them civilians, were killed or maimed in the explosion of munitions worldwide since 1965. More than a quarter of children are intrigued by their shapes and colors.

Ashamed: The country's major producers and users of cluster bombs were away, like the United States, Russia, China, Israel , Pakistan and India. But the NGOs say the agreement should stigmatize these weapons, including among non-signatories. Moreover, the arrival of Barack Obama in the White House could also lead to a U.S. signature.

Series 4 / 4: Bombay attacks

Reason: discrimination against Muslims

Muslims represent the largest minority in India (about 13.4% of the population ). Yet, they are subject to constant discrimination. The government report of the Sachar Committee, published in November 2006, says they almost always come back of the pack. Muslims are poorer than poor Hindus poor, often even behind the outcasts. They are less educated and less represented in government, public services, etc.. They are the target of systematic manifestations of violence instigated by the Hindu right. When there is a trial, they are often poorly compensated and perpetrators are rarely apprehended. Worse still, a process of ghettoization is being put in place. The dangerous result is that young Muslims find themselves increasingly marginalized.

Muslims who live mostly in the Kashmir Valley are under attack, abuse, arbitrary arrests and even disappearances. They recently organized a resistance movement, leading a kind of peaceful intifada. One of these terrorist attacks in Mumbai, who spoke on Indian television with her laptop had a Kashmiri accent. He talked about the mistreatment of Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian government knew what would happen ...

Bombay was a target easy because of lax security arrangements. Journalist Wendy Kristianasen, who was on site, noted that shortly before the security checks were more important than in most Western cities. "We could not enter the central station without identity papers," she added. "As for the entry in the famous Taj Mahal, she could only take place through a small door where visitors were under electronic monitoring and searches of their bags.

The eve of the attacks, the government had discussed the establishment of a domestic intelligence service (Indian equivalent of the FBI). According to Praveen Swami, magazine journalist Inthe The Hindu, Indian intelligence agencies have provided the government "at least three times, specific information about imminent terrorist attack of great magnitude in Mumbai" . Political leaders of India are now widely blamed for not acting. As for the Pakistani track, it remains very uncertain. No one confirms it.

What do we know of the Mujahideen of the Deccan?

few hours after the attacks, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on television that the attacks were launched by people "based on outside the country. " Although he did not have mentioned the allusion was clear to Pakistan.

Ved Marwah, an expert Indian intelligence has advanced directly to the BBC that the reference to Mr. Singh to complicity outdoor related precisely the Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, based in Lahore (Pakistan), which operates in several countries. The choice of Western and Jewish targets enhances the likelihood that we are dealing with international Islamist networks.

This seems to confirm their choice of targets. According to some accounts of westerners, the perpetrators have attempted to isolate those who had British and American passports.

What happened to Bombay?

Of Attaq SIU was conducted on seven different targets, the night of November 26 to 27, in Mumbai, the commercial capital of India. Such attacks are unprecedented in the country. They were held in the historic and trendy part of town, which was a magnet for Western tourists. Two days later, two hotels were still besieged. The assessment reports of 195 dead including 27 foreigners and at least 295 wounded. The attacks were conducted by trained men armed with Kalashnikovs and hand grenades, to designate themselves as the "Mujahedeen of the Deccan."

The four main targets were the railway station in Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal (grand building built under British rule), the Taj Mahal Palace and Hotel Trident Oberoi modern. They had in common that they are very westernized places. As the father of the groom was already in full effervecence. the venue did not take into account certain factors. It reflected, among other things as whether or not he was going away, away, away from here, to find it or not, whether instead.

The Gaza Strip Situation dramatic dying

Zerrouky Hassane article in humanity

Palestine: Several surveys highlight the extremely poor the situation of the blockaded territory Israel: infant mortality rates and record unemployment, devastated health sector.

"Save Gaza, save children's lives, save our future" is the cry of alarm that launches Medoukh Ziad, a teacher at Al-Aqsa Gaza, which has sent us an overwhelming situation. Gaza is dying. This little area of just 360 square kilometers is cut off from the rest of the world because of the blockade imposed by Israel since June 2007. The 1.5 million people who live there are virtually prisoners : They can not get out.

The agricultural sector destroys

"The closure of Gaza is a physical punishment as that population's mental, "warned the United Nations Relief and Works Agency United Nations for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said in a statement released Tuesday. The UN agency said its food distributions (wheat, meat, milk powder and oil) to about 750,000 Palestinians in Gaza will stop on Thursday, unless it obtains access to the occupied territory.

Note that the number of trucks delivering fuel, cargo and other goods necessary for the socio-economic activity and health has increased from about 300 per day on the eve of the blockade to 45 at the beginning of the blockade, to be virtually zero today. Thus, food scarcity has automatically pushed up prices in a region where the infant mortality rate (30 deaths per thousand, according to WHO) is one of the highest in the world.

Economically, the 3900 SMEs / SMIs operating in 2005, leaving only 195, which operate at idle. The 960 garment factories subcontracted some 5 million pieces destined for the Israeli market are now at a standstill, and their 25 000 employees, now unemployed, went to swell the ranks of the 80% of unemployed in the Territory.

Hit hard, agriculture (70,000 hectares), which employed over 40 000 employees (12% of the workforce), lives. The export ban on agricultural products, causing losses of 150,000 dollars per day, added to lack of seeds, fertilizers and agricultural equipment, is being reduced to nothing this vital sector of the economy.

More serious still is the impact on infrastructure, health, education and more generally the daily lives of residents of the Gaza Strip. In terms of construction, all projects within the framework of the UN - as road networks and streets of towns and villages, roads, construction of universities and hospitals worth 350 million dollars, are stopped. The shortage of drugs may affect more than 160 types of products in the coming days, reports a study of the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

lack of parts replacement, 90 medical devices have failed. In addition, according to WHO, the Israeli army has banned the release of 1 150 patients, including 210 in a worrying state, go to heal in Egypt or Jordan or elsewhere. Without treatment abroad, 259 patients have died since June 2007. What is added, according to a WHO report, that "psychological trauma and stress with high levels, especially among children and young adults."

Power Plants stationary

In addition, the shortage of fuel, resulting in frequent power shutdowns still in service, is not without consequences the functioning of vital sectors in terms of lifestyle and health: it is true of water supply services, wastewater sewage treatment, waste treatment, and more generally of garbage collection ; lack of fuel and spare parts, over 50% of vehicle fleet of Gaza City are off, and garbage piled up visibly in the streets of Gaza and other locations.

Democratic Republic of Congo The Dalai Lama

Published in Human Rights Tribune :

Since August, the conflict in North Kivu between the Armed Forces Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and troops of General Laurent Nkunda's rebel National Congress for People's Defence (CNDP) has intensified and is accompanied by serious violations and massive human rights that constitute international crimes punishable by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Strong concern the situation prevailing in the capital of North Kivu, Goma, where in front of the advancing rebel CNDP elements in flight FARDC has engaged in acts of looting, summary executions and rape against civilians in the city and its surroundings. Insecurity and confusion would be exacerbated by the presence of Republican Guard soldiers sent to suppress the behavior of the FARDC and who surrendered themselves to the abuses. And a dozen soldiers of the FARDC were allegedly slaughtered by the Republican Guard. For their part, CNDP elements while retaining their positions outside the city awaiting the opening of negotiations with the Kinshasa government, also engages in atrocities in the territories under their control, including looting camps for displaced and war Kibati Rutchuru.

Faced with the imminent resumption of fighting and abuses that accompany them, the forces of UN Mission in DRC (MONUC) are clearly unable to fully assume their role of protecting civilian populations, limited by a mandate that allows them to use the force to combat gangs but only in support of the FARDC.

Demonstrations and clashes fanned by politicians, were also held in towns in eastern DRC against the presence of MONUC is accused of being unable to ensure protection of populations, or do not want to do. Thus, in the town of Goma 27 October 2008, the population has addressed the staff and facilities of MONUC. In Kisangani, groups of young men armed with full knowledge of the authorities, also expressed by attacking the forces of MONUC. Some of them are joining the security forces and army patrolling the city in search of rebel elements allegedly infiltrated. A climate of suspicion and tension develops when any criticism is seen as a betrayal. Defenders of Human Rights which denounced relentless abuses by all parties to the conflict are perceived as opponents "traitors" and "lackeys of Western". These charges a bit more fuel resentment of the population against MONUC and the international community and anything designated as foreign.

lost hope

Despite negotiations lasting from 2002, China's persecution continues. The Dalai Lama has lost hope of negotiating autonomy for Tibet with China. He finally realized that "China simply does not address the issue of Tibet . But according to his spokesman, he plans to change its policy on the matter. It was not until November that we will know more following a large gathering of Tibetan leaders in exile. It will be held in Dharamsala, in northern India, where the Buddhist dignitary refugee lives since 1959.

Moh Model Question Papers

U.S. 2008 presidential

polls are not always reliable ... and even less in the case of an African-American. That is the theory defended by Richard Keyser, journalist Monde Diplomatique.

U.S. elections on November 4 finally determine who the next president. The possible election of Barack Obama would open a new era in Washington. The context seems promising for proposal political break with the Republican agenda. This does not fail to have consequences on the rest of the world.

Polls Announce a clear lead for Barak Obama, which, for many, relieves the mind. But the presidential race is already over it? According to Richard Keyser, this is not a foregone conclusion. Many respondents provide responses perceived as politically correct and "socially desirable". Face to face, they will say it is good to say, because any other response would be judged inappropriate, see racist. Especially if the candidate is his own party. But in the voting booth, the anxiety provoked by the idea of an African-American president could make them change their mind ...
